What is the purpose of a primer?

A primer, or undercoat, plays an essential role: it creates a stable surface for paint application. It acts as an insulator between the metal and the topcoat, preventing corrosion and rust. Thanks to its slightly rough texture, paint layers adhere perfectly. Primer also masks stains and imperfections and is recommended for overly smooth surfaces.

Without primer, your work may be compromised:

• The paint won’t adhere properly and may peel off.

• The desired color might not be achieved.

• Risk of yellowing.

• The need for multiple paint layers, increasing costs.

• Lost time on retouching.

When should you apply a primer?

Applying primer depends on the condition of the surface:

• New, never-painted surface

• Metal surfaces (use epoxy primer for insulation and anti-rust protection)

• Steel or aluminum surfaces (use phosphating primer, or wash primer—do not apply filler over it)

• Filled or repaired areas (choose a high-build primer)

• Time-saving jobs (use a wet-on-wet primer, no sanding required)

• Polyester surfaces (use polyester primer)

• Color changes (a white primer makes it easier to switch from dark to light shades)

Primer colors

Primer color depends on the final paint shade and nearby parts (bumpers, rims, fenders…). Choose:

• White primer for white, yellow, or light orange shades (tri-coats)

• Light gray primer for light color charts

• Dark gray or black primer for dark color charts
