Why Use a Primer?
A primer creates a surface that adheres perfectly to the new layer of paint while providing protection against corrosion. Its advantages include:
-
Promoting excellent adhesion and a smooth finish
-
Preventing paint from peeling
-
Extending the lifespan of the coating
-
Reducing the number of coats required and minimizing waste
When Should a Primer Be Applied?
Using a primer is recommended in the following cases:
-
The surface is too porous and would require several coats of paint
-
The surface is glossy or slick, reducing paint adhesion
-
The body panel has never been painted before
-
The color is being changed (from dark to light or vice versa)
-
Switching from oil-based to water-based paint
-
Protecting metal surfaces from rust and corrosion
How to Choose a Primer
The right primer depends on:
-
The condition and nature of the substrate (steel, aluminum, plastic, etc.)
-
The type of existing and new paint to be applied
-
The desired final color (light, dark, or neutral)

How to Apply a PPG Primer
For optimal results:
-
Use products from the same brand for primer and paint
-
Prepare and sand the surface before painting
-
Apply using an aerosol or spray gun (1.8 nozzle) at about 25 cm from the surface
-
Apply several coats as specified in the technical sheet, allowing drying time between layers
-
Lightly sand for a uniform finish
-
Rinse to remove impurities before applying the final coat
Work in a well-ventilated area and wear gloves, goggles, and a mask for your safety.
