Finishing - Detailing

What is polishing liquid?

Polishing liquid is generally used after waxing the car. It must be done for several purposes:
  • Make surface defects less visible.
  • Mask scratches and small dents.
  • Strengthen the paint after it has been weakened by acid rain.
  • Give a beautiful shine to the bodywork.
However, you need to know how to properly use the polishing liquid to avoid streaks and a clumsy finish.

What is a polishing foam?

What is it?

Polishing foams are used in the car body polishing step. They are used with a liquid polishing product. Generally, foams are used with a machine that spins the pad quickly.

Indeed, polishing foams are essential. Towels cannot replace them. For example, applying a polishing liquid and rubbing it on the body surface may result in a mediocre finish.

How to use a polishing foam?

Polishing foams are an intermediate surface between professionals and the car. They allow storing the polishing product to distribute it evenly over the car. They ensure a perfect polish.

Why use a polishing foam?

To see the importance of polishing foams, there is an easy test to do:
  • First, simply use a paper towel to rub the polishing product on a small section of the bodywork.
  • Next, you need to use a polishing foam with the same product on another adjacent section.
  • Finally, it is recommended to wipe both with a microfiber towel and observe the difference.

Guide to using a polishing foam

This guide concerns machine polishing:

Step 1: Attach the polishing foam

You need to start by attaching the polishing foam to the machine. The brand and model of the tool determine how to fix it.

In most cases, there is a backing plate behind the polishing foam. It can be screwed into the tool so that it doesn't fly off when the machine is turned on. You need to check the polisher's manual to see exactly how to proceed.

Other tools use velcro to attach the pad to the machine.

Step 2: Prime the foam

Priming the polishing foam ensures it will be ready to start work.

Some experts wring and press the polishing foam before putting it on the machine. But you need to know how to do it, as there is a risk of tearing it.

Step 3: finish the priming

For this step, use your fingers to spread the liquid on the foam. The goal is to completely cover the polishing foam face with as little product as possible. Add small drops gradually.

Step 4: apply final drops on the foam

It is advised to apply three drops. Each drop should be about the size of a penny. These drops should be placed near the edge of the polishing foam, as this is the first section that contacts the bodywork surface.

Step 5: select a section of the bodywork

Before placing the polisher on the car surface, choose a section. Preferably, start with a small section if you are a beginner. This helps minimize damage that could be caused by incorrect handling. It is also an opportunity to learn how to use the polisher and polishing foam.

Step 6: Start the machine

For this step, take the machine and set it to its lowest speed setting. Then, start it. This evenly distributes the product on the tool and on the car surface.

Step 7: spread the liquid over the entire desired section

This step highlights the importance of the idea of creating sections. While the machine is still running at the lowest speed setting, it should be moved slowly around the predefined section of the bodywork.

Step 8: start polishing

When the polishing liquid starts to be dispensed, increase the machine speed. Ideally, it is recommended to choose a medium or high speed.

When using an orbital polisher, make sure not to stay too long in the same spot. This may cause the finish layer to melt and damage the bodywork.
