Autocolor Automotive Clearcoat

What is a Nexa Autocolor Automotive Clearcoat?

Nexa Autocolor is a brand of the PPG group, the global leader in automotive paints. It offers a wide range of technical products developed specifically for professional body shops.

Thanks to innovative formulations and cutting-edge technologies, Nexa Autocolor clearcoats deliver high performance in gloss, durability, and ease of application.

Nexa Autocolor Clearcoats

Nexa Autocolor clearcoats are transparent resins enriched with specific additives to ensure optimal paint protection. They effectively resist:

  • UV rays and extreme weather conditions

  • Road contaminants (salt, cleaning products, etc.)

  • Stone chips and road debris

  • Everyday wear

Their flexible, glossy formulation ensures a professional finish—provided the clearcoat is applied correctly and polished if necessary.

When should you use a Nexa Autocolor clearcoat?

Clearcoat is essential for the final finish and protection of bodywork. It is applied systematically after the basecoat, especially for vehicles exposed to bad weather, frequent washing, or strong sunlight.

Nexa Autocolor clearcoats available at ColorBox

  • High gloss: P190-7020 HS Plus 5L

  • Matte finish: P190-1062 Matte Clear 1L

  • Fast drying: P190-8000 Express Plus 5L — ideal for reducing energy consumption in the booth

Properties and role of automotive clearcoat

  • Long-lasting protection against corrosion and external aggressions

  • Preserves the paint’s shine and color

  • Adds gloss, flow, and an attractive finish

  • Increases the surface’s mechanical resistance

How to apply an automotive clearcoat

Application steps

  • Preparation: thoroughly clean, dust off, and degrease the bodywork

  • Application: apply the clear in two light coats, observing the recommended flash/off times. Use an HVLP spray gun with a suitable nozzle (1.2–1.3).

  • Polishing: once cured, polish if needed to improve gloss

Tips for a successful application

  • Choose a clearcoat suited to your booth’s temperature and humidity

  • Follow the correct mixing ratio with the thinner or hardener

  • Work in a clean, ventilated environment at a stable temperature

  • Never touch the surface after degreasing

  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment

Types of automotive clearcoats

There are different types depending on their chemistry:

  • Cellulosic clearcoat: older generation; fades quickly and needs frequent maintenance. No longer recommended today.

  • Glyptal (alkyd) clearcoat: made from synthetic resins; offers good gloss and improved resistance but is now rarely used.

  • Water-based clearcoat: more environmentally friendly, odorless, and non-flammable; easy to apply. However, durability is lower than solvent-borne clears and they are sensitive to cold.

  • Acrylic clearcoat: the most common type in professional bodywork. Cures quickly (around 2 hours), offers excellent resistance, and delivers a very high-quality finish.
