UV primer bodywork: performance and speed for professionals
What is a UV primer in bodywork?
The UV primer is a single-component surfacing primer with ultraviolet polymerization, designed for quick repairs. Unlike traditional primers, it requires neither hardener nor prolonged drying: it hardens in a few seconds under a UV lamp. Ideal for spot repair and localized touch-ups, it optimizes workshop efficiency.
Use of the UV primer
Its application follows a standard preparation (cleaning, degreasing, sanding) and immediately precedes painting. UV products are ready to use and allow for almost immediate repainting after polymerization. Thickness, exposure time, and type of lamp (LED 395 nm, arc lamp…) must comply with the manufacturer's instructions.
Key steps for a successful application
- Surface preparation: degreasing, sanding (P500–P600), dust removal.
- Application: 1 to 2 thin coats, evaporation of 1 to 2 minutes between passes.
- UV drying: polymerization from 60 to 120 seconds depending on the UV source used.
- Sanding: excellent sanding behavior, no clogging.
Advantages of the UV primer
- Time saving: elimination of oven curing, immediate sequence of steps.
- Energy saving: no heating, low consumption.
- Versatility: suitable for steel, aluminum, galvanized, plastic substrates.
- Excellent finish: filling power, moisture barrier, solid base for finishes.
