HB156 - RM HB156 - Medium lenticular aluminium 0.5 L

R-M Onyx HD HB156 waterborne mixing base is a medium round aluminium used to formulate automotive metallic colours. Supplied in a 0.5 L can, it is blended within the Onyx HD system for automotive refinishing.

HB156 must be incorporated according to the R-M colour formula for the required shade. The resulting basecoat must then be coated with a recommended R-M clearcoat.

Application and advice

The following instructions come from the supplied general Onyx HD technical data sheet, dated December 2017. They apply to the formulated colour, not to HB156 alone. Check the current R-M recommendations before application.

• Homogenisation : stir each new mixing base manually, then agitate it on the mixing machine for 15 minutes before use.
• Substrate preparation : clean with PK 2000, sand R-M primers or original finishes with P400 abrasive, then clean again with PK 2000. The technical data sheet also allows application over an R-M wet-on-wet primer.
• Mix preparation : incorporate HB156 according to the colour formula. The general ratio given is 100 parts by volume of formulated Onyx HD colour to 60 parts by volume of Hydromix.
• Equipment : HVLP gravity-feed spray gun with a 1.4–1.5 mm nozzle and 0.7 bar pressure at the air cap.
• Metallic colour application : apply 1 or 2 coats followed by an effect coat, for a total film thickness of 12–15 µm. Allow each coat to flash off until matt.
• Filtration : do not use a microfilter in the spray gun for metallic or pearlescent colours.
• Drying : approximately 15 minutes at 20 °C or 10 minutes at 45 °C, followed by cooling. Additional airflow can accelerate drying.
• Clearcoating : after the required drying, apply an R-M clearcoat recommended for the Onyx HD system.
• Protection : follow the safety instructions and wear suitable personal protective equipment.
