What is the purpose of a primer?

The primer, or undercoat, plays an essential role: it creates a stable surface to receive the paint. It acts as an insulator between the metal and the painting process, to prevent corrosion and rust. Thanks to its slightly rough texture, the paint layers adhere perfectly. The primer masks stains and imperfections, and is recommended on surfaces that are too smooth.

Without a primer, your work may be compromised:

• the paint does not adhere properly and peels off;
• the desired color may not be achieved;
• risk of yellowing;
• necessity to apply numerous coats, increasing costs;
• loss of time in touch-ups.

When should a primer be applied?

The application of a primer depends on the condition of the substrate:

• new surface never painted;
• metallic surface (prefer epoxy primer for insulation and anti-rust);
• steel or aluminum surface (use a wash primer, without putty on top);
• filling work (opt for a filling primer);
• time-saving (choose a non sanding primer);
• polyester surface (prefer polyester primer);
• color change (a white primer facilitates the transition from a dark to a light shade).

The color of the primer depends on the final paint and the surrounding elements (bumpers, rims, fenders…). Choose:

• white primer for white, yellow, or light orange shades (tri-coats);
• light gray primer for light color charts;
• black and dark gray primers for dark color charts.
