What is a polish?
Bodywork polish is a liquid compound, slightly abrasive. It is designed to:
- Cleaning
- Smoothing
- Improving the shine of automotive paint.
Indeed, over time, the paint and bodywork top coat get damaged. They develop scratches and marks. This is where polish comes in. Its use gives the paint a newer and more attractive appearance.
What is a polishing foam?
Polishing foams facilitate bodywork polishing. They help bodywork professionals apply polish to vehicle surfaces. Simply pour the polish liquid onto the foam to apply it evenly on the bodywork surface.
Unlike ordinary towels, polishing foams offer high-quality polishing.
Even better, polishing foams have several advantages:
- An even distribution of the polish liquid over the entire body surface.
- Faster and more efficient polishing.
- A perfect finish.
How to polish a freshly painted car?
Wet sanding
Before starting polishing, ensure that the clear coat has fully hardened. Then, it is recommended to leave the vehicle under the sun for at least 24 hours.
Once hardened, it is recommended to use a tungsten block to carefully remove the prominent peaks of the paint before wet sanding.
Next, opt for wet sanding. The goal is to make the surface smoother and eliminate tiny bumps and waves in the paint.
Sanding is an excellent way to gradually remove scratches by leveling the paint surface.
Polishing
Once wet sanding is finished, the vehicles must be given a shine through polishing. To do this, a wash is necessary. For this step, it is recommended to clean with fresh water and ensure drying using a lint-free cloth.
For polishing, you must
- Ensure that the polishing foam is completely clean and properly fixed.
- Apply the polish to the polishing foam.
- Avoid putting too much polish on the foam. Otherwise, there is a risk of burning the paint.
When using an electric pad, it must be turned on at the lowest speed. That is about 1800 RPM. Indeed, when the speed is too fast, sudden stops at startup burn the paint.
Finishing
Most polishing foams must be used with a finishing polish.
- Make sure to moisten a little from time to time to avoid burning the paint.
- Avoid keeping the abrasive on the same area for more than a few seconds. This may damage the base layer.
- You must apply enough polish so that the abrasive remains damp. Otherwise, it would be necessary to cover the surface again.
Final polish
It is possible to use a glaze product based on wax or silicone to give a thin protective layer and more protection to the paint layer.
Preferably, apply a small amount directly on each section of the car body. Once the product is applied, let it rest for a few minutes. Then, use a clean and damp abrasive to clean it.
