Bodywork spray gun: essential for your finishes
The basecoat spraygun is an extremely important piece of equipment when it comes to car painting. Thanks to its design, it sprays paint at low pressure using a large volume of air. In this way, the paint transfers more effectively to the substrate. Older versions of the basecoat spraygun operate at high pressure, which causes the paint to bounce off the bodywork, especially if used by amateurs. This produces an imperfect result and a loss in terms of product. But new inventions have made it possible to create low-pressure spray guns for small surfaces.
In terms of adaptability, most paints are suitable for use with a basecoat spraygun. If your paint is too thick, you can thin it by adding a thinner. Note that you can use aqueous or solvent-based paint, as long as it does not contain solids.
The advantages of spraying with a bodywork spray gun
The number of people using basecoat sprayguns and clearcoats is growing by the day, for a variety of reasons:
- Spraying ensures better coverage of the paint on the surface, and therefore a more even finish;
- The bodywork is constantly exposed to the elements and external aggression. A well-applied coat of paint or clearcoat provides maximum protection and makes the surface smooth and robust. It has been shown that spraying effectively covers the surface, unlike brushing, which only partially covers the bodywork to be painted.
- The gun is easy to use and doesn't require a lot of time, which optimises the efficiency of your workshops.
Who needs a bodywork gun?
The basecoat spraygun can be used by professionals and private individuals alike. However, we recommend that this type of equipment be handled by professionals in the field. There are a number of safety precautions to take into account, such as wearing a mask and overalls, respecting the distance and place where you apply your paint (a ventilated room, not outdoors), and maintaining the equipment (washing a basecoat spraygun is necessary to increase its longevity) … However, it should be mentioned that applying paint with a basecoat spraygun, as such, is within everyone's reach.
How do I use a bodywork spray gun?
Using a basecoat spraygun is very easy. The gun consists of a cup (for the product inlet) and a compressed air hose (for the air inlet). The air and paint are sprayed and mixed via the nozzle. But knowing how to paint is another story! You need to start by connecting the air. Then pour the paint into the cup. The variables on the basecoat spraygun are set according to your needs and the nature of the job (small area to be painted, large-scale job and painting the entire surface…).
For a clean, fast finish, remember to thin the paint. In addition, keep the appliance at least 20 cm away from the surface of the bodywork. The spray gun must also be held at right angles to the substrate for best results. Finally, don't forget to read the instructions for the paint and clearcoat you're going to use (the technical data sheet includes recommended pressure measurements).
Don't hesitate to maintain your equipment for future use. Washing a clearcoat spraygun is essential to get rid of paint residues and to be able to use the equipment for another job.
Criteria for choosing your bodywork spray gun
If you're planning to buy a basecoat spraygun, there are a number of points to bear in mind:
- The scope of the project: performance varies from one gun to another. Depending on how you use your paint every day, make sure you choose the right gun for the job.
- The nature of the object to be painted: there are basecoat sprayguns designed specifically for car painting. The surface area of vehicles is also a criterion for choice, since powerful guns can cover large vehicles as well as small ones, while the opposite is less obvious.
- The product to be treated: varnish, paint, enamel… You need to check that your spray gun is suitable for your uses in terms of the products applied.
