For a finish that meets your expectations, we recommend PPG primers. These primers are designed to accelerate the application process and perfect your bodywork. Efficiency and durability will therefore be the order of the day.

The PPG brand

With 125 years of existence, the American brand PPG enjoys a worldwide reputation. PPG is present in over 60 countries and offers professional body repairers a wide range of products. PPG's quality products include primers that optimise performance and improve the surfaces to be painted. With over 140 plants worldwide, PPG guarantees the quality of these primers based on innovative formulas.

Why use a primer?

A primer is an effective solution for creating a surface that adheres to the new paint to be applied and protects against corrosion. Thanks to its composition, the primer ensures good adhesion and a smooth, impeccable finish. The paint you apply won't peel off and will bond securely to your surface. What's more, you'll ensure that your application lasts longer. This product saves you from wasting several coats of paint to hide defects on your bodywork. Your surface will be protected and will look less damaged. The thick, hard-wearing primer receives the applied paint, saving you time and money.

When is it necessary to apply a primer?

Priming is always advisable, especially in these cases:
  • Primer is essential if your bodywork is too porous and needs several coats of paint. The primer makes the surface uniform and conceals any defects;
  • The primer avoids the problem of paint peeling off if the surface is too glossy and icy.
  • The primer solves the problem of paint adhesion if your bodywork has never been painted before;
  • Opting for a primer is necessary if you choose to change your bodywork coating;
  • For water-based paintwork, you need a primer if your bodywork is painted with oil-based paint.
  • To insulate sheet metal or bodywork supports against rust and corrosion

How do I choose a primer?

Choosing the right primer depends on a number of criteria:
  • The condition of the surface to be painted ;
  • The nature of the material of the surface to be painted ;
  • The colour and type of existing paintwork on the bodywork. If your bodywork is a dark colour, choose a dark grey or black primer.
  • The colour and composition of the new paint. If your new paint is a light shade, opt for white or light-coloured primers.
You can also choose from water- or oil-based primers. Water-based products are environmentally-friendly and quick-drying. What's more, they're easy to clean. Oil-based primers, on the other hand, require thinners for cleaning. They dry after a short time, but are effective if your surface does not adhere to those of the first type.

The different types of primer

There are different types of bodywork undercoat to meet the needs of bodywork specialists:
  • Primer filler to fill in roughness, holes and make a smooth bodywork surface PPG D8018 white G1 3L, PPG D8019 dark grey G7 3L, D8024 grey primer G5 3L
  • Insulating primer that protects against rust but has no filling effect: PPG D8015 grey G5 3L, PPG D8017 dark grey G7 3L
  • Epoxy primer to insulate and protect sheet metal against corrosion and can be applied to any substrate or bodywork material
  • A phosphating wash primer that provides good adhesion to steel and aluminium but does not provide particularly good protection against corrosion. Be careful never to put body filler on top of a wash primer, as this can cause paint and clearcoat to peel off.
  • Wet-on-wet primer, also known as no-sanding primer, for greater productivity, PPG D8501 white G1 DP4000 3L range, PPG D8505 grey DP4000 G5 3LpPG D8507 dark grey DP4000 G7 3L.
  • 2K primer that requires the insertion of a hardener or catalyst
  • 1K primer
  • UV primer for very rapid curing with a UV bodywork lamp. The investment in a UV lamp is significant, but you will gain considerable productivity and save energy. And yes, there's no longer any need to turn on your spray booth!

PPG brand primers

PPG primers offer many advantages, including:
  • PPG primers avoid wasting time and resources. With fewer coats of paint to apply, you can optimise your time and resources.
  • PPG car paint sits perfectly on the surface of the bodywork. It does not peel off quickly or yellow. You'll get the colour you want and set your finish just right.
  • Any imperfections in the bodywork will be sealed. The result is clean, consistent and very attractive.
  • The PPG primer reinforces the robustness of the painted surface and improves its durability.

How do I apply a primer?

Discover our tips for the successful application of your PPG primer:
  • It is not advisable to combine the primer of one brand with the paint of another. Choose products from the same brand for better adhesion;
  • Primer and paint application are similar, so choose a spray can to add your primer or a basecoat spraygun with a 1.8 nozzle like the Devilbiss SLG 620-18 primer spraygun, which offers unbeatable value for money;
  • Start by preparing and sanding the surface to be painted;
  • Then spray the primer using the spray can 25 cm from the surface of the bodywork;
  • Cover the entire surface and repeat the process as many times as necessary. Check the number of coats to be applied on the technical data sheet for your primer;
  • Allow to dry between coats of primer;
  • Sand your bodywork a second time for a uniform, smooth finish;
  • Finally, rinse the entire surface to remove any impurities.
For your own safety and that of others, do not apply the primer outdoors. Choose a well-ventilated room for all your work. So protect yourself with special equipment such as gloves, masks and goggles.
